Tiner starts with some basic anatomy and muscle lessons, yes, but his actual exercises at the end of all the theory follow the same pattern. Stick figure poses are the first ones. Then its box figures. Then fleshing out. I just think he felt it was important to know the theory before getting into the practice.

It's all good info regardless. I want to do another attempt at the male 360 layout. Haven't started the female one yet. I will say one thing though... Looking through the ConceptArt.org sketchbooks I now understand why many of them copy the sketches used in the art textbooks. It's bloody difficult to replicate what you don't understand.

Re: [ kolor.guild ]
We've sort of been told to copy, actually. In figure drawing class, we've done some basic anatomy stuff. The entire skeletal structure now. It started with a lesson on the bones and then we got told to find an anatomy book and copy the pictures down, labeling the bones we discussed.
Also, I was reading the Frazetta article in IFX. Apparently some art teacher told him he's good, but he needs anatomy lessons. He gave Frazetta a book and Frazetta religiously copied all the pictures. I think a huge part of the learning curve is copying others work and seeing how they do it. Next year, for painting, we have to do a "master copy." It's not the first time I've seen master copies used as a learning tool. Even Bobby Chui suggests copying other artists work as a good warm up exercise to start your day.
As much as it feels like cheating, I've come to accept that we have to COPY COPY COPY! and then eventually start producing original work...

I was thinking today that maybe it also had something to do with 'muscle memory'. You instinctively remember to place muscles in the areas they're needed before even thinking about it.
EDIT:
Ergh... The woman version didn't turn out that well I think.
