B-Boy Be Trippin'

I'm not sure if I should post this in the Graphic Design/Illistration/Photography thread?

Here's a new piece I'm working on, I'm just having trouble finishing it off.

This is where it all started:

I really like it, but it's boring on its own and there's no real composition to speak of. Then when I started adding a background and what-not it all became too busy. So I figured the only way for me to tame it would be to try limit my pallet somewhat and try bring more contrast between the dude, the particles, and the background. This made me sad, because if you look at the top, how awesome does that glowy blue look? Then lower down, how awesome does that glowy green look? And the red? The yellow? The pink?... Yeah, I love all of those colours, and I want all of them to feature in some way. So anyways, begrudgingly, I set off and did a couple million variations. It was really difficult to decide, but in the end I'm settling on this:

... or this?

I can't decide! :?

I like how the first one has strong contrast, but I feel the colour of the particles is too plain and lifeless.

I like the dynamic of the second one - but then it doesn't have the same kind of oomph as the first. I also don't like the turqouise in the gradient transition - any way I could avoid this?

And I feel I need to do something more interesting with the colour of the b-boy himself, or do you think its better keeping his clothes the same hue? - I felt I needed to do it like that, or he gets lost in the particles.

What do you think of the compostion? Is it too centred, too boring? I tried experimenting a little with something just floating in the middle of the page:

But I was lacking in direction with that idea, and nothing ever really came together properly.

Do you think a background like the one I've got is interesting enough? The thing is I don't want it to be plain black, but at the same time I want it to be dark so that the glow stands out nicely.

Yes, it's just personal. I never get to do elaborate stuff like this at work. And also note, this is kinda like a rough sketch really, I'm just experimenting with the colour and composition at this stage.

I'm in the passenger seat, typing on my phone, so this crit might suck. :P

The fact that he's dancing seems to beg for a more dynamic composition; his being symmetrical really doesn't make this easy for you. I actually think the diagonal arrows, busy as they were, at least did well to push the feeling of movement, breaking up the symmetry a bit.

I think you may be a little too hung up on the particle stuff, and I think they're the weakest part of the piece at the moment, mainly because it's a solid opacity and doesn't show an energy-related progression of colour. What kind of energy is causing them? Is it his movement? Is it coming from the contact between his head and the ground? Looking at things like fire, the colours fade to transparent as they move away from the energy source, and progress from white, to yellow, orange, dark red. The basic rule is that a bright energy source is almost always white, and fades to different hues based on value. Yellow is the lightest value colour, while red is a dark value colour. And along the particle trail, each cross section could show this opacity and colour variation too. The advantage to doing it this way is that you won't have mass centred all the way down your symmetry line; instead, the focus will be where his head touches the ground, and move upward from there.

I know you mean the particles to be more of a design element than something realistic, but I find that whenever I'm stuck with something that doesn't look right, observing reality can help solve many problems.

Whew. End of phone fail.

I agree with El. Especially with the design around the head. In the first image he looks as if he's just floating. The design around his head helps place him in more of a realistic and better understood pose.

Maybe you're trying to go too bold with the colours as well as having bold shapes. I really think you should rather opt with bold colours and have more subtlety to the shapes instead. Mess around with some opacities I think.

Okay, thanks for the input guys. I really quite like I'll have to put this on the backburner for a bit, but I will re-visit it soon enough.

Here is some source for inspiration:

But particularly some Adidas adverts, which I can't find right now...
