Charcoal copies

Postby Elyaradine » Sun Mar 07, 2010 10:23 pm

For our drawing class this year so far, we've shifted into doing a lot of really fast drawings, some of which are as short as 10 seconds. Now that we're in the audiovisual faculty, the focus of our drawing classes has shifted more toward being able to draw things relatively accurately, quickly, for use in sketching out quick storyboards for our animations/films.

Part of this comes down to learning anatomy. An understanding of where certain landmarks are and how they are affected by weight leads to faster, more convincing drawings, and knowing what part of the body goes where and what shape/size it is means that one needs to think much less about what comes next, and more about the actual pose and the action.

As such, my drawings so far are really simple, and don't look like much. :P

For homework though, we're supposed to copy various master drawings and study their composition, the structure behind the pose, and various shapes of the body. Here are some of those:

These look really cool. In figure drawing, we're also starting with a bunch of fast drawings and quick poses, 5min down to the crazy 10seconds, but only cause we're first years. In second year we slow down to the normal three hour class for one pose thing.

Yeah. My 10-second ones pretty much turn into stick figures or squiggles. I see the logic in doing it, but it's still not my favourite exercise. :P

I'll post the work I'm submitting later, if I remember. Back to Pretoria and crappy internet today.

Oh, I was looking for references for anatomy. It seems relatively easy to find semi-nude girls that still look tasteful. But guys? Gawsh. They mostly look like gay porn.
